New Voices: Yuto Obata

New duo works for flute, violin, accordion, voice and movement.

This concert presents a selection of Yuto Obata's recent duo works, featuring a variety of instrumental and interdisciplinary combinations, including a duet for flute, violin and accordion, soprano voice and alto saxophone, and a work for pianist and dancer with multimedia.

In essence, Obata's work seeks to fuse distinct sound sources into a single acoustic entity. Rather than constructing relationships based on hierarchical overlap—such as the distinction between primary and secondary voices common in Western classical music—his music focuses on auditory similarity or illusion through ambiguity. In these works, the listener often cannot clearly identify the origin of a sound, as timbres overlap, merge, and transform. This approach is particularly evident in his duo compositions, where the boundaries between instruments or performers are intentionally destabilized.
